Ransomware group Maze shuts down

The announcement from Maze earlier this month that it is shutting down may come as a relief to some. Maze ransomware attacks were one of the most devastating strains of cyber attacks in its ability to disrupt a network whilst also stealing/exfiltrating data it finds then threatening exposure. The cyber criminal therefore not only demands a ransom payment but also causes a data breach.

Given how successful and profitable the Maze group has been, it begs the question whether its operators will simply rebrand as another ransomware group, or collaborate with other cyber criminals. One thing however is clear, ransomware will remain a popular type of malware and unsuspecting individuals and organisations must remain vigilant against new novel strains of attack.

One of the most active and notorious data-stealing ransomware groups, Maze, says it is “officially closed.”
